"We urge all citizens of Ecuador to unite and work within the framework of democratic institutions of Ecuador to achieve rapid restoration of order and peace."

Correa was elected president in 2006 and served in 2007. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Illiniois at Urbana-Champaign in 2001.
